This activity was provided to classes as a 5-day lesson plan!

Materials Needed

  • Mung Bean and Lentil Sprout Seeds (3 tablespoons each)
  • Water
  • 2 Large Mason Jars (with screw bands and screen)
  • Plastic Container

Activity Plan

Start the sprouts on a Monday. This will allow 5 days for them to grow and your class can try them on Friday.

Monday

  1. The mung bean and lentil sprout seeds are in labelled envelops. Cut along the dotted line and pour each kind into a separate mason jar.
  2. Fill both jars halfway with water. Screw on the band and screen and allow the seeds to soak overnight.

Tuesday Morning

  1. First thing Tuesday morning, drain the seeds.
  2. Rinse and drain again.
  3. Prop the jars up in the plastic container so that the water can continue to drain. This is important! The seeds need to be able to drain completely and have some air circulation. You may need to insert a container between the jars to help keep them upright.

Tuesday Afternoon

  1. First thing Tuesday morning, drain the seeds.
  2. Rinse and drain again.

Wednesday and Thursday

  1. Continue to rinse and drain the seeds twice each day (first thing in the morning and at the end of the day).
  2. Let the class observe how much the sprouts grow each day.

Friday

  1. Your sprouts should be ready to eat! There will be enough for each student to try a small quantity.
  2. Encourage students to add the sprouts into their lunches!
